Many years ago I had a lot more Christmas decorations than I do now. Now I have about 4 tubs, including a separate tub for ornaments. We have the tradition of buying one ornament each year of our marriage that represents something we did or that happened that year. And so we have 30 of those, since that's how long we've been married.
Around 10 years ago I began to let some decorations go. Items that didn't mean that much to me, or multi-item sets of which I decided to just keep one item. This year I decided to take a critical eye and really take note of what I didn't put out or didn't love.
Christmas items that left our house (or more precisely, are in the garage in a garbage bag, waiting to be donated the next time I go to the thrift store):
Included are:
*2 rolls of wrapping paper I really don't care for
*a stocking my high school Spanish teacher made for me when I was an assistant in her class
*a hanging ball decoration that I like but my husband complains of every single year because he says he runs into it, no matter how high I hang it in the doorway
*4 of the 6 Starbucks ornaments a nephew gave us a few years ago. We kept one green and one red, and the rest can vamoose
*two wooden plaques I won at a charity silent auction
*a plastic Santa planter that came with cut greenery the previous year
*8 ornaments that don't have any special meaning to us (mostly given by random coworkers through the years)
*a set of Snoopy lights
*a random fall bow I threw in the photo because I took the following photo first and forgot it
*corncob pipe that actually goes to a wooden snowman decoration we put in our yard for many years. I'm ready for the snowman to go with the pipe to someone else.
And while I was at it, I thought I'd go through my fall decor. Why do I even have fall decor? I don't decorate seasonally! Obviously I thought they were cute and had aspirations of putting these things out. This is the complete collection of my fall decor, except for one hanging sign I'm probably going to donate as well.
*two metal pumpkins I won at a charity silent auction
*fall centerpiece I picked up at a yard sale
*yard sale pumpkin decoration
*scarecrow couple, also from the same yard sale
It's not a lot, but now every single Christmas item I have, I do use to decorate.
